Palace Square 

Palace Square was laid out in 1819-1829 by Carlo Rossi, a neoclassicist architect of Italian descent who designed a large number of streets and squares in St. Petersburg. It is one of the most beautiful and harmonious ensembles of architecture in the world, Palace Square remains the main public space of St. Petersburg throughout nearly three centuries. Nevsky Prospect also begins from Palace Square.

Nevsky Prospect is the main St. Petersburg's avenue and one of the best-known streets in Russia. Planned in the early 18th century as part of the main road to Moscow and Novgorod, today Nevsky is one of the city's main tourist destinations. It has always been the central and the most significant city street with numerous iconic and historical buildings such as Kazan Cathedral, the Dom Knigi book store. From Nevsky Prospect opens the wonderful view to Griboedov Chanel and to the picturesque Russian-style Church the Savior on Blood. Here you'll also find the largest department store in the city - "Gostiny Dvor", the Russian National Library, an impressive monument to Catherine the Great and the Anichkov Bridge, adorned with 4 striking equestrian statues.

St.Peter and St.Paul Fortress

The Peter and Paul`s Fortress is an unique historical and architectural  monument of XVIII-XIX centuries. Peter the Great  started the construction of a new capital with this Fortress on May 27th, 1703 and this day is actually considered to be  the birth of St. Petersburg. The Fortress is a six-pointed star figure and was constructed according to the project made by the French engineer Zh.G. Lamber with the participation of the Tsar. Besides being of great historical value, the Fortress is a sacred cultural temple of Russia. Its architectural ensemble is focused around St. Peter and Paul Cathedral serves as the burial-vault for all Russian emperors from Peter the Great to Nicholas II. Is well worth seeing the inside of the Cathedral: a unique iconostasis, fantastic paintings, valuable stone monoliths of the tombs — the interior was carefully and exquisitely done by top craftsmen of the time. The gilded spire of St.Peter and Paul`s Cathedral topped by a figure of an angel is visible from afar and serves as a symbolic "reference point": no building in the historical center is allowed to be constructed of the city may be higher than the Cathedral.

Hermitage

      

The Hermitage Museum is Russia's best gallery of world art, one of the largest artistic and cultural and historical museums in Russia and one of the most prominent art museums in the world. It is the main tourist attraction of St. Petersburg. The principal building of the Hermitage Museum is the Winter Palace, the residence of the Russian Czars. Magnificently located on the bank of the Neva River, this green-and-white three-storey palace is a marvel of Baroque architecture. The collections of the museum, created by order of Empress Catherine II the Great in 1764, are divided into 6 sections and occupy almost 400 rooms. The museum counts today with more than 3 million works of art and artefacts of  world culture. They are dated from prehistoric to modern times. In its rooms you can admire the masterpieces of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, P.P.Rubens, A.Van Dyck, El Greco, etc.

Pushkin

Tsarskoye Selo (also known as Pushkin) is one of St. Petersburg's numerous Imperial estates. Located just 25 kilometers south from the city. On the territory  of a large  park there is a magnificent blue, white and gold Catherine Palace. The Palace is a jewel of Russian baroque style and also famous for housing the world famous Amber room, all covered with gold leafs and mirrors it is considered to be one of the world's wonders. Priceless amber panels were stolen by Nazi troops during WWII, but  now are being painstakingly recreated by Russian craftsmen. Also you will find the luxurious Grand Hall, and a long, gold, mirrored ballroom.

Peterhof

This small town is famous because of  its  palaces and gardens of Peterhof, created by order of Peter the Great. They are also known as the “Russian Versailles” and are considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.  As a former residence of the Russian monarchs, Peterhof brings together the finest achievements in national and international culture of the 18-19th centuries. Peterhof is St.Petersburg's most famous and spectacular Imperial estate. Nestled on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, the palace was built by Peter the Great initially as a rest place on the way to the Imperial naval base at Kronshtadt. But the Czar was quick to recognize the attractiveness of the area and masterminded a vast estate intended to rival the famous gardens of Versailles. The Grand Palace, filled with fascinating and elaborate interiors, sits on top of a high seashore ridge overlooking the vast Lower Park. The enormous park is adorned with statues and pavilions, it boasts the world's largest system of fountains, earning it the title the "Russian Versaille". The main attraction of the Upper Park is  four marble sculptures created by Italian artist Giovanni Bonazzi and installed here in 1757. The Upper park is also famous for its oldest ponds - a square pond dug in 1719 to ensure the Lower Park with water. In 1773, in the center of these ponds is a sculptural group of dolphins made of lead was established. You can also see here the beautiful fountain of Venus surrounded by six dolphins. In the background of the fountain the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul can be seen, which a part of Peterhof Palace is.

River and Canals

St. Petersburg is surrounded by water and interlaced with a complex web of rivers and canals that seem to bind the city together, while also marking the borders of its different districts and neighborhoods.
